Here’s an easy guide on how to prepare yerba mate and everything you need to know to start drinking it. There are different ways to prepare Yerba Mate, you can do it in the traditional way (mate gourd, straw and loose-leaf Yerba Mate) or brewed with a French press, teapot, strainer or coffee machine.
Hot Yerba Mate Preparation
Ideal water temperature is between 150F to 170F (never boil water to avoid burning the tea ).
Mate gourd:
Fill 3/4 of your gourd with Yerba Mate, cover the gourd with your hand and gently shake for 5 seconds to dislodge any dust. Tilt gourd to 45° on one side and add a small amount of cold water. Place your bombilla (straw) into the empty side of the gourd. Slowly add hot water until the gourd is full. Water should be poured slowly (if it’s poured too fast, the tea will separate and steep unevenly). Avoid touching the straw, stirring makes all the herb steep at once, clogging the straw. Enjoy!
Teapot/ Tea ball/ French Press/ Coffee Maker:
Add 1 tsp of loose Yerba Mate per 8oz of water. Pour hot water, steep 4-6 minutes depending on desired strength. Enjoy!
Mate Latte:
Brew hot Yerba Mate. Add 4 tbsp of your favorite heated milk (almond, coconut or dairy). Add sweetener of choice (Monkey fruit sweetener, honey) some cinnamon (optional). Stir & Enjoy!
