How to cure a Calabash Mate Gourd?

How to cure a Calabash Mate Gourd?

It is very important to cure the calabash Mate gourd before any use.

The process is very simple:

  1. Fill the gourd with old, previously used yerba mate and add warm water so the yerba doesn’t dry out. Let it sit for 24 hours. It's crucial to keep it wet while it's being cured (if you do not have used yerba you can always pour new yerba in a cup or glass and cover it with water, leaving it for a couple of hours. Then, add the wet yerba mate to the mate gourd.)

  2. The next day remove the yerba mate with a spoon and lightly scrape the interior to remove any natural debris.

  3. Repeat the process 2 more times for better results.

  4. After 3 days, rinse it (try not to make the outside leather wet) and use a paper towel to absorb any extra moisture.

  5. Let it rest for a few hours in a ventilated area or under the sun. Now it is ready to use! Enjoy!

Notes:

*Mate gourd’s usage will also help to complete the curing process. The more you use it, the faster the fruit will fully cure. It is normal sometimes for the Calabash interior to turn from dark green into black, this is part of the curing process.

**After use care: It is important you remove the used yerba mate and keep your mate gourd dry, otherwise mold is likely to form. Never leave your gourd soaking in water, this will ruin it. The best way to dry it after washing is to shake it out, to get rid of all the excess water and dry it upside down on a drying rack or kitchen towel.
